Mellifera

Mellifera, adj, from the Greek, “melli-”, meaning honey, and “-ferre”, meaning to bear. Hence, the honey-bearer.

I took inspiration from bees, a much more hardcore insect than people give them credit for, in the cultivation of the brand identity. It centers around the titular character, a warrior woman atop a queen bee, highlighting the matriarchal nature of the bee hive, and the ferocity of bees. Drawn on procreate, I decided to stick with the line art rather than a fully rendered character because I enjoyed the openness it brought to the overall composition. The sword, a motif I reiterate on the side of the label, draws parallel to the bees stinger. I wanted there to be a fantastical air to the identity because the complexities of bees remains astonishing to me.

In addition to the honey itself, I designed sachets of bee attracting flowers that could be sold in tandem with the honey to further push the companies primary mission: to save the bees and to stoke appreciation for the unsung hero and essential force in our ecosystem. The colors are pulled from the flowers themselves, but the central light blue color is the anchor of the color scheme, chosen because bees can see blue hues better than red hues.
